Women, especially caregiving women are one thing I know for sure. BUSY!
Something I hear often from people is, "I want to start meditating but I'm just too busy! I don't know when I could fit it in."
I teach my clients two types of meditation- formal and informal. While I encourage you to practice formal meditation for the many health benefits, practicing mindfulness informally can also make a huge impact on your life.
Here are a few tips to add a mindful moment to your busy day!
1. Make it part of your morning routine
Attach a short meditation to something you are already in the habit of doing such as pausing and taking 5 deep breaths before you brush your teeth or meditating in the shower. It counts, I promise! If I don’t do my meditation first thing in the morning, sometimes it just doesn’t get done. By linking it to one of these daily activities, I am more successful!
2. Be careful of expectations
You don’t need to sit cross legged on the floor for 45 minutes every day to reap the benefits of meditation. Just a few minutes, several times a week, sitting on a chair or the side of your bed will give you a good result!
3. Learn to breathe
Focusing on your breath is the easiest way to drop into the present moment. You can literally meditate anytime, anywhere, in any circumstance by tuning to the breath.
4. Slooooow down
We rush through our activities and as a result life passes us by. Slow down. Practice pausing before you transition activities. Use cues such as an alarm on your phone to remind yourself to slow down and be present in that moment.
5. Get some accountability
Get a friend or an app to help keep you motivated and showing up for yourself! And of course, if you are a member of my private Facebook group, Everyday Mindfulness, you get lots of support and accountability in our bi-annual 10 Day Meditation Challenge! It's coming up April 22!
With a little practice, intention, and support you can learn to meditate even when you think you’re too busy! I know you can!
